Last night’s meeting went pretty well I thought. And my talk “Just how far can you push Twenty Eleven without code” was well received. I said I would publish links to the plugins and resources I mentioned , so here goes:

The WordPress.com showcase page for Twenty Eleven – http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/

Spectacu.la Page Widget — http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/spectacula-page-widget/

Custom Sidebars – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-sidebars/ (I loved how excited some people got about this one!)

WordPress.com Custom CSS – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/safecss/

Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twenty-eleven-theme-extensions/

Upper Menu for Twenty Eleven – http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/upper-menu-for-twenty-eleven/

In another part of the evening we mentioned backup plugins, and how to turn on debug in wp-config.php.

Another plugin that a few people expressed an interest in was CMS Tree Page View

We also mentioned StudioPress themes — http://www.studiopress.com/ which I wholeheartedly recommend (affiliate link).

Finally, someone asked about being able to remove the original full size image after WordPress has resized it to create the thumbnail and intermediate sizes. I thought I’d seen a plugin that did this, but couldn’t find it. I did, however find this snippet of code in answer to a question on WordPress Stack Exchange. That code could be turned into a plugin, but I would add a little extra code around it, including a check that the original size is actually bigger than your designated largest size.

If I forgot to mention something else we talked about, please leave a comment.

If you came to the meeting last night, let me know what you thought.

November’s Manchester WordPress User Group, run by WordPress co-founder Mike Little, takes place at MadLab (http://madlab.org.uk) on Wednesday, November 16th from 7pm to 9pm.

The Agenda includes:

WordPress News

AllFM group project final report

An overview of the Theme Review Guidelines

Questions & Answers

Troubleshooting session

A Chance to show off your WordPress site

This month I’d like to continue the troubleshooting session idea. I’d like to break the group into separate sessions for a while with people helping each other with little issues or problems. So, if you have an issue with your site, come along with the details and maybe bring your laptop. If you are a knowledgable WordPress user or developer come along willing to help out.

If you have other suggestions for items to go on the agenda, please comment here or on the mailing list.

Anyone with any experience of WordPress is welcome, whether you’ve heard about it and want to know more, or you’re a WordPress developer, you’re welcome to our meetings.

MWUG is run by Mike Little (http://zed1.com), co-founder of WordPress with Matt Mullenweg (http://ma.tt/about), so come along to discover how WordPress can benefit you or your organisation, and get specific advice on any WordPress questions you have.
